MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) announced that the first round of the elections, originally slated for October 30, would be held on November 30, and the second one on January 29, 2017, a local outlet Haiti Libre reported.
According to the outlet, a large number of polling stations were destroyed or heavily damaged by the hurricane and many of the people forced to leave their homes did not take their identification with them or lost it, which made the elections nearly impossible.
On October 4, Hurricane Matthew tore through Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. At least 473 people have died and nearly 1.5 million remain in need of humanitarian assistance in Haiti, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
