MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The earthquake hit the southern Peruvian region of Arequipa on Sunday night at a depth of about 6.2 miles, according to the US Geological Survey. The epicenter was 4.3 miles west of the town of Chivay.

According to the El Comercio newspaper, the natural disaster destroyed 132 houses and partially damaged 556 buildings, a church and a hotel.
The list of deceased includes a US citizen and a Peruvian minor, according to local authorities.
Rescue teams are currently distributing humanitarian aid with shelter, beds and tents.
