MOSCOW (Sputnik) — At least two people have been killed and eight more are missing because of heavy floods in Chile, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said Monday.
"Two people were killed, a man and a woman, eight people are missing," Bachelet said speaking about the aftermath of the natural disaster, as quoted by the CNN Chile broadcaster.
She added that about 230 people lost their homes due to the floods, while some 300 houses sustained damage of different levels.
Heavy rains in Chile that started on Friday caused severe waterfloods, because a number of rivers near the country's capital of Santiago had overrun their banks. The natural disaster left millions of Chileans without drinking water and hindered country's copper production, because copper companies had halted the activities of the mines due to the flooding threat.
