The cost of the Uber taxi dispatch service has increased dramatically after Mexico City authorities imposed restrictions on the use of private vehicles amid environmental concerns.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – According to information distributed across social media, the average cost of a trip arranged through the Uber mobile application increased three to five times on Wednesday. One Uber user told RIA Novosti that for some cars Uber tariffs have increased seven times.

In late March, the Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis announced amid a deteriorating air quality in Mexico’s capital that cars in Mexico City would have to be idle for at least one day a week and one Saturday a month starting from April 5 and until the end of June.

Vehicles of disabled persons, electric and hybrid vehicles, school transport, the vehicles of public security services, civil protection and urban services, among others, are exempt from the regulation.

Mexico City authorities issued an air pollution alert for the first time in 14 years in March amid a high ozone concentration, which can cause heart and lung problems.
