Captured Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" ("Shorty") Guzman is being transported to the maximum-security Altiplano prison in the state of Mexico, local media reported.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) On Friday, Guzman, who had escaped from Altiplano through an underground tunnel in July 2015, was delivered to Mexico’s capital after his capture in the north of Sinaloa State.

"After we make the identification of his identity by fingerprints and other parameters, [Guzman Loera] will be taken again to the Altiplano," Attorney General Arely Gomez told reporters, as quoted by the Formula radio station late Friday.

Mexican authorities broadcast live his transfer to the prison, where El Chapo was seen boarding a Russian Mi-17V5 helicopter.

El Chapo’s most recent escape is not his first one. In 2001, he escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico’s Jalisco state, using a laundry cart.

Guzman’s Sinaloa drug cartel smuggles cocaine from Colombia through Mexico to the United States. The cartel is also involved in the production and distribution of Mexican marijuana, heroin and other drugs in North America and Europe.
