MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The bodies of eight Mexican tourists killed in a recent accidental attack by Egyptian security forces were flown to the Mexican capital on Tuesday, the Latin American country’s Foreign Ministry said.
"Their repatriation is the result of the steps taken by the Foreign Ministry with support from the Mexican embassy in Egypt and in coordination with Egyptian authorities," the Mexican Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The flight was organized after authorities finished the autopsies of the bodies and other procedures needed for repatriation.
On September 13, twelve people, including eight Mexican tourists, were mistaken for Islamist militants and killed by Egyptian security forces in a counter-terrorism operation in the Western Desert. Ten others were wounded and taken to a local hospital.
The Western Desert is a popular tourist attraction in Egypt, but is also known as a hideout for a number of militant groups.
