According to La Segunda portal, the victims of the deadly shooting were aged 18 and 25. The suspect is a 20-year-old man who was apparently angry that they had vandalized his home and opened fire at them.

Shortly after the tragedy, he was detained and is due to be interrogated later in the day, the news portal said.

Interior Minister Jorge Burgos stated that such cruelty cannot be justified, according to La Segunda.
"According to preliminary data of the investigation, the alleged killer had no ties with the police forces present in the city [during the demonstration]" Burgos was quoted as saying by the media outlet.

Chile has seen several waves of student protests since 2011, with students calling for a universal educational system.
In mid-April 2015, seven people were injured and some 134 were detained in the first large-scale student protests of 2015 in Chile.
