MOSCOW, January 29 (Sputnik) — A woman died and at least 54 people, including 22 children were injured in a gas explosion outside a maternity hospital in Cuajimalpa, a borough of Mexico City, the Associated Press reports, citing local officials.

"We have to conduct an evacuation for safety because a lot of the people are babies in the crib area," said Miguel Angel Mancera, the mayor of Mexico City, as quoted by AFP. The injured were taken to other hospitals nearby, he added. The majority of them sustained only light injuries.

A gas tank truck exploded outside the hospital, leaving the building partially in ruins, according to the AP.

Rescue teams arrived at the scene and are currently searching for people trapped under the rubble.
