On this day 30 years ago, the German Democratic Republic, known as East Germany, officially ceased to exist and merged with the Federal Republic of Germany. Since then, German Unity Day has been a public holiday held annually on 3 October.

Sputnik is live from Dessau, Germany as the town is unveiling a monument to former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev as part of the Unity Day celebrations.

According to sculptor Bernd Gobel from Halle, the monument honours Gorbachev's efforts to bring about German unification.

The event is being attended by representatives of the local government and the Russian Embassy in Berlin.
