The German police were conducting an operation to free a hostage in the south German town of Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, a representative of local police press service told Sputnik on Monday.

MOSCOW/BERLIN (Sputnik) — According to media reports, a 31-year-old employee of a local youth welfare office was taken hostage on Monday in the agency's building in the town.

An attacker is a 28-year-old-man man, who was deprived of his parental rights, the Bild media outlet said.

A local police representative said to Sputnik that the streets around the building were cordoned off, as the police operation was underway "due to the dangerous situation." He declined to provide further details.

Please support us in our work in #Pfaffenhofen and do not circulate any pictures, videos, etc. Otherwise, you are helping the attacker.

Police also asked local residents via Twitter to avoid the area around the building.
