New Earthquake Hits Central Italy, Tremors Felt in Historical Part of Rome

A RIA Novosti correspondent reported that a new earthquake hit central Italy with tremors felt in the historical part of Rome. Evacuation is underway in the city's metro.

A total of three quakes have been felt in central Italy.

Earlier in the day, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake hit central Italy Wednesday morning, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) reported. The epicenter of the earthquake is reportedly about 62 miles to the east from Rome.

Later, a 5.7-magnitude quake took place in the same area. The magnitude of the third earthquake was estimated at 5.5.

Some Rome subway trains were cancelled and several schools were evacuated following series of earthquakes in central Italy, Adnkronos news agency reported. According to the news agency, which cited the subway managing company Atac, several subway lines were suspended because of the earthquake.

According to RIA Novosti correspondent, an office building in the center of Rome, where BNL bank is located, was also evacuated as a precaution.

There were no immediate reports of any damage or injuries as a result of the earthquakes.
