PARIS (Sputnik) — The Russian Orthodox Church leader, Patriarch Kirill, blessed a new church in the heart of Paris during its first divine liturgy on Sunday.
The Trinity Cathedral is part of a Russian cultural complex on the banks of the Seine River, just yards away from France’s landmark Eiffel Tour.
The Russian government bought the plot of land for the cultural center six years ago. Construction works started in April 2015 and the church opened in October of this year.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was expected to attend the opening ceremony together with French President Francois Hollande, but the state visit was cancelled after the French leader changed the agenda of bilateral talks.
