Switzerland Backs India for Nuclear Supplier Group Membership
The Swiss government has already decided to do so but no deadline has been set. A "yes" vote will speed up the closure of three of the country's five reactors that provide a third of its electricity.

The Green Party's initiative will force the shutdown of Beznau I and II in canton Aargau and Muehleberg in Bern as early as in 2017. The Goesgen reactor in Solothurn will follow in 2024. All nuclear energy production will be eventually phased out by 2029, when the Leibstadt reactor in Aargau goes offline.

The campaign argues that safety of old reactors operating since the early 1970s can no longer be guaranteed and is pushing instead for more energy efficiency and renewable energy resources.

In May 2011, the Swiss cabinet proposed to gradually decommission all of the country’s nuclear power plants by 2034.
