Renzi's Constitution Reform to Boost His Power, Constrain Italian Citizens
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Structural reforms are necessary to simplify institutions in both Italy and the European Union, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said at a press conference after meeting with US President Barack Obama on Tuesday.

"Structural reforms are important for Italy, but are also important for institutions in Brussels," Renzi stated.

The Italian prime minister explained that a "yes" vote in Italy’s upcoming referendum will strengthen the country’s position in the European Union, where he said reforms were needed to simplify the system’s institutions.

On December 4, voters will decide whether to amend Italy’s constitution and limit the size and power of the senate. The referendum is an attempt to end the trend of political paralysis in Italy.

The measure would also replace senators with representatives from regional councils and give the central government more control over financial decisions.

Renzi stressed that Italy has no plans to leave the European Union, and will work from within the bloc to change policies.
