Germany stepped up security controls on Friday at airports, borders and rail crossings into France following the deadly truck attack in Nice, the federal police said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Thursday evening, a heavy truck hit a crowd watching Bastille Day fireworks in southern France, killing 84 revellers and wounding dozens more.

"In coordination with the French security authorities, the Federal Police is strengthening their controls on cross-border traffic with France," the police statement read.

French President Francois Hollande said the assault was of a "terrorist nature."
