Martin McGuinness, the Sinn Fein Deputy First Minister in the North of Ireland and a former senior Irish Republican Army (IRA) commander has launched Friday his Party's EU referendum campaign in the most bombed hotel in Europe, the Europa in Belfast.

EDINBURGH  (Sputnik) Speaking at the "Putting Ireland First" launch McGuinness ‎said that reform of the EU was only possible by the UK remaining part of the trading bloc.

"The European Union is far from perfect but the only way to address that and change it is from within," McGuinness said in a statement following the launch.

"Brexit would be bad for Ireland, bad for business and trade, bad for our farmers, bad for human right and worker rights," McGuinness added.

Pointing to claims that the referendum was being driven by an internal conflict within the Conservative Party, McGuinness went on to warn that "narrow interest" could set the political agenda in Ireland.

"We cannot allow the narrow interests of the Tory party, which was not elected by the people of the North of Ireland, to take us out of Europe and set our political agenda," McGuinness said.

Sinn Fein declined to respond to questions from Sputnik over their choice of location for the launch. The Europa Hotel in Belfast was bombed 28 times during the Anglo-Irish conflict that became known as The Troubles and ‎is believed to be 'the most bombed hotel in Europe.'

The IRA last bombed the hotel, popular with journalists and celebrities, in 1993.
