Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will discuss European security issues, situations in Ukraine and Syria during a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

MINSK (Sputnik) – Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will discuss issues concerning European security, as well as the situations in Ukraine and Syria.

"The international situation demands tight coordination on issues over European security, the Ukrainian crisis, and the situation in the Middle East," Lavrov said upon his arrival to Minsk.

Moscow and Minsk should also discuss cooperation of the two countries in many international organizations, such as the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where Belarus holds observer status, Lavrov added.

Lukashenko said he wished to discuss with Lavrov the future of Belarusian-Russian relations, the Eurasian Economic Union ahead of a meeting slated for May 31 in Astana.

"I would like to hear your assessments on several international issues, Ukraine, and Syria so that you could perhaps catch me up on some of the latest events and so that we know how to coordinate and correct our position," Lukashenko said.

The Belarusian leader added that the cooperation between the foreign ministries of both Russia and Belarus should be a good example for the coordination between other institutions of the two states.
