Czech Police Plan to Purchase Weapons Worth $2Mln to Counter Terrorism

Czech police are planning to purchase a variety of weapons worth 40 million crowns ($1.90 million at the current exchange rates) by the end of 2016 in a bid to boost safeguard measures against terrorism, local media reported Wednesday.

PRAGUE (Sputnik) — The police are planing to purchase short-barrel arms in the amount of 527 pieces worth 5.9 million crowns and long-barrel arms in the amount of 530 pieces worth more than 40 million crowns, Ceske Noviny news portal reported, citing its sources in the Czech Interior Ministry.

European countries decided to strengthen security measures following terrorist attacks in November 2015 in Paris and in March 2016 in Brussels, with Daesh jihadist group, banned in Russia, responsible for the ferocious acts.

Last year, the Czech Republic experienced some domestic security problems. An armed man broke into a restaurant in a small east Bohemian town of Uherske Hradiste and opened fired at the people inside. He killed eight people and committed suicide, with local police unable react to the situation urgently.
