Forty-five percent of Europeans would like their respective countries to take a vote on whether to stay inside the European Union, a recent poll published Monday has found.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Of some 6,000 sampled in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Belgium, Hungary and Sweden, 33 percent said they would vote to leave the 28-nation bloc, according to results of an Ipsos-Mori poll published by The Financial Times newspaper.

Support for an EU membership referendum was the strongest in Italy, where 58 percent said they would vote regardless of the following outcome. The Poles were the least enthusiastic, with just 22 percent saying they wanted a referendum.

The survey comes more than a month ahead of a crucial British referendum on their country’s EU membership on June 23.

Forty-eight percent of those polled agreed that the UK decision to leave would trigger a domino effect. More than a half – 51 percent – said the United Kingdom’s departure would hurt the EU economy.
