STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) – Residents of a village in the central part of the Swedish Baltic island of Gotland have been asked not to leave their homes due to a raging forest fire on the island, local media reported Saturday.
The fire reportedly remains out of control, though, it has not spread over new territories since early Saturday. Therefore, the evacuation of residents is not relevant at the moment, the SVT Television reported, citing local rescue services.
However, according to the channel, the rescue agencies have not ruled out the evacuation.
According to earlier media reports, the Gotland wildfire spread across the area of up to 150 hectares (370,000 acres) on Friday. The island previously experienced a forest fire in 1992, when 1,000 hectares of land was burned out.
