ROME (Sputnik) — The Italian police increased security measures in Rome following the deadly explosions in the Belgian capital earlier on Tuesday, local media reported.
The security was increased, in particular, at a train and subway stations, la Repubblica daily newspaper reported Tuesday. In addition, the protection of the Belgian embassy in Italy, Vatican and Belgian cultural institutions was strengthened.
Two explosions hit Brussels' Zaventem airport at around 8:00 a.m. local time (07:00 GMT) on Tuesday. Later in the day, blasts were heard across metro stations in central Brussels.
The explosions at the airport killed at least 13 people and injured 35, according to the prosecutor's office in Brussels. The blasts at Maelbeek metro station in Brussels city center reportedly claimed the lives of at least 15 people and left 10 in critical condition.
