EDINBURGH (Sputnik) In a statement, Sinn Fein’s McGuinness said that he had been in contact with his party’s members and staff who are currently in Brussels and expressed his solidarity with the people of the Belgian capital.

"This morning’s attacks on people at airport and metro stations in Brussels are deplorable and I condemn them unreservedly," McGuinness said.

Two explosions hit Brussels's Zaventem airport at around 8:00 a.m. local time (07:00 GMT) on Tuesday. According to the prosecutor's office in Brussels, 13 people were killed and 35 injured in what the authorities say was a terrorist attack.

More casualties are feared amid explosions across several metro stations in central Brussels, as a nationwide terror threat has been elevated to the maximum level and all public transport has been suspended.
