BELGRADE (Sputnik) — Around 700 migrants, who managed to cross the border from Greece to Macedonia on Monday, will be returned to Greece by the Macedonian law enforcement personnel, local media reported, citing the Macedonian Interior Ministry.
Earlier in the day, a large group of refugees making their way through Greece under police supervision was met by Macedonia's law enforcement personnel at the state border.
"The police have managed to detect refugees [in Macedonia], who, along with the journalists accompanying them, will be returned to the Greek territory. Police personnel has been dispatched to the location and is controlling all the possible points of illegal crossing of the state border," the ministry said in a statement, as quoted by the TV Nova channel.
Over 2,000 migrants reportedly left the refugee camp in the Greek town of Idomeni near Macedonia earlier on Monday to find a spot on the border between the two countries where it would be possible to cross over.
The reports come after the closure of borders along the so-called Western Balkan migrant route, which has resulted in more than 10,000 refugees being stranded in Greece at its border with Macedonia.
