MOSCOW (Sputnik) — One person died and five were injured Tuesday in a building collapse at a power station in the southern UK town of Didcot, the Oxfordshire County Council said.
"I can confirm search operations are in progress and that there has been one fatality, five persons have been taken to hospital and 3 persons are currently missing," Area Manager Mat Carlile said.
Firefighters received a call to a building collapse at Didcot Power Station at 4.04 p.m. local time (16:04GMT). Emergency responders rushed to the scene and quickly secured the area.
"Dust from the collapse covered a considerable area and we can confirm that there were no hazardous materials within the building," the County Council said, urging local residents to stay inside and keep doors closed.
The Didcot coal-fired power station became operational in 1970 and was closed in 2013. It was in the process of demolition when the accident happened.
