MOSCOW (Sputnik) – According to the poll commissioned by the state broadcaster ZDF, 58 percent of Germans would support border controls being reinstated within the 28-nation bloc despite the potential difficulties such a move would cause to civilian and freight transport.
Half of the German public is not satisfied with Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-door refugee policy, but this criticism of the chancellor's approach to inward migration has decreased from 56 percent in January to 50 percent currently, the same poll revealed.
Fifty-four percent of German respondents see little chance of refugees successfully integrating into German society, the poll found.
Germany has become a key destination for hundreds of thousands of refugees and immigrants fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa to the bloc since the start of 2015. Last year it registered over 1.1 million refugees, according to German Interior Ministry estimates.
