At least 18 people died Thursday when a boat carrying migrants capsized off the Greek island of Samos in the Aegean Sea, the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) health charity said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Previous media reports spoke about 12 casualties, including nine children. Ten migrants have been rescued, while further 17 are missing.

It is the second tragedy in the Aegean Sea in the past two days. At least seven people, including two children, died on Wednesday after their boat sank close to the Greek island of Kos.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the first month of 2016 has already become the deadliest January on record for refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe.

Many immigrants travel from Turkey across the Aegean Sea to Greece, the gateway into EU’s borderless Schengen zone.
