BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — Celebrations in the pedestrian area of Brussels were set to last for several hours on New Year's Eve.
According to the RTBF broadcasting company, Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur cancelled the event after Belgium’s Coordinating Unit for Threat Analysis (OCAM) assessed the terror threat level and the country’s interior ministry held a meeting on the issue.
Belgium has decided to maintain the highest terror alert level in place until the end of 2015, after it was revealed that several attackers and an alleged organizer of the November Paris attacks were either born or lived in Belgium.
On Tuesday, Brussels police stepped up measures to ensure the security of its premises after receiving "specific threats" against its headquarters in the Belgian capital.
