ATHENS (Sputnik) — Athens has called on all European Union member states to fulfill their responsibilities in relation to the refugee crisis, a Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday.
"Despite all of the problems, omissions and delays, Greece will meet all of its obligations, without exception. But it asks that others do the same. The European Union needs to impose this on everyone," Konstantinos Koutras said in a statement.
The European Union is currently struggling to manage a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of people fleeing conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Greece is a major transit country for those trying to reach wealthier European states, such as Germany and Sweden.
Over 1.2 million illegal border crossings have been detected by the EU border agency Frontex since the beginning of 2015.
