MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, the pro-independence Junts pel Si (Together for Yes) Coalition and their allies from the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) party submitted a resolution to the Parliament, calling for a beginning of the process of creation of an independent Catalan state.
The reason for the postponement is that Spain’s center-left Citizens party and the People’s Party of Catalonia, affiliated with the ruling People's Party of Spain, proposed parliamentary initiatives to prevent the adoption of the resolution, saying Catalonia’s independence initiative was contrary to law and unconstitutional.
The Parliament of Catalonia was formed after the September 27 regional vote.
Junts pel Si and CUP have won 72 out of 135 seats in the Catalan parliament, whereas the People’s Party of Catalonia secured only 11 seats.
Catalonia has long sought independence from Spain, but the Spanish government has repeatedly declined Catalonia’s right for independence.
