MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Greece must establish high-quality efficient reception facilities for refugees arriving in the country amid a surge in arrivals, a UN High Commissioner for Refugees spokesman posted on its Twitter account Friday.
"Surge in arrivals on Lesvos [Lesbos] this week, overcrowding, frustration. 7 also reported dead in boat collision. Better reception urgently needed," Adrian Edwards said.
At the same time, the UN Refugee Agency posted on twitter that the High Commissioner had urged governments to create additional legal channels for people to arrive in Europe, without having to resort to the use of human traffickers.
Europe has been overwhelmed by a refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers fleeing home countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty.
Over 710,000 migrants arrived in the European Union during the first nine months of 2015, EU external border protection agency Frontex said earlier in October.
