ATHENS (Sputnik) — The Hellenic Council of State, the supreme administrative court of Greece, is considering making illegal an August draft presidential decree that would grant temporary asylum to thousands of refugees, local media reported.
According to a decree introduced after the August resignation of the government headed by leftist Syriza party leader Alexis Tsipras, migrants could gain asylum if they applied before November 2010 and were shown to not be a national security threat.
The council stated that granting asylum to an undefined number of people without clearly defining what justifies asylum is against the country's law, cited by Greek newspaper EfSyn on Sunday.
Greece, alongside EU member states, is struggling with a massive inflow of refugees from conflict-torn countries in the Middle East and North Africa.
According to the UN refugee agency, over 442,000 refugees have traveled to Europe in 2015 via the Mediterranean Sea, with almost 3,000 people perishing en route.
