The peaceful protest came after Denmark said that it had already accepted its fair share of asylum seekers and would not take part in a proposal by the EU Commission to take a share of 160,000 refugees.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Some 30,000 people gathered outside the Danish parliament building in Copenhagen on Saturday to protest against the government's position on the refugee crisis, The Local reported.

The peaceful protest came after Denmark said on Friday that it had already accepted its fair share of asylum seekers and would not take part in a proposal by the EU Commission to take a share of 160,000 refugees.

At the same time, a counter-demonstration has also been held in Denmark, with participants urging the government to close the country's borders for undocumented migrants, the media outlet said.

The Local said that some 3,200 refugees have arrived in Denmark between Sunday and Thursday, with many of those traveling further to Sweden.

The European Union is currently grappling with a high influx of migrants, thousands of whom are fleeing conflict-torn countries in North Africa and the Middle East.

Denmark has a right to opt out of the EU Commission-stipulated quota scheme under the terms of its treaty with the European Union.
