Greece is currently attempting to reach a new bailout deal with its three main lenders, the European Commission, the European Central Bank (ECB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The current package expires on June 30, but the talks so far have not yielded any results. Greek government sources claimed on Wednesday that Athens had rejected its lenders’ reform proposals.
“#Greece: work is underway; can still take many hours. But I have a hunch that unlike in Sophocles' tragedies this story will have happy end,” Tusk wrote on Twitter.
On June 17, the Greek central bank warned in a report that Greece could face an unprecedented collapse unless the negotiators seal a deal in the near future. The bank said that if there is no bailout deal, Greece will be plunged into a default which is likely to lead to its ultimate exit both from the eurozone and the European Union.
