RIGA (Sputnik) – The Riga prosecutor's office has brought charges against a Latvian citizen who created an online petition regarding reunification with Russia, the prosecutor's office spokeswoman told journalists Thursday.
According to spokeswoman Aiga Eiduka, the creator of the petition has been charged with publicly calling for the elimination of Latvia's territorial integrity by including it within another state.
"Such crimes are punishable with imprisonment for three years, forced labor or a fine," Eiduka said.
Almost 6,500 people signed a petition on the website Avaaz.org. According to local media, the petition was published on the website in March 2014, prior to the start of a referendum in Crimea on secession from Ukraine and reunification with Russia.
The individual who started the campaign was detained in February 2015, with Latvian police seizing his computers and data storage devices.
