German FM Promises Ukraine 'Full Support'
13:34 GMT 16.03.2015 (Updated: 17:25 GMT 20.03.2015) Ahead of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s visit to Berlin, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he will offer the Ukrainian leader 'full support' but also remind him of his responsibilities.
“We can't be complacent. We must use all our resources to stabilize what has so far been achieved and to enter into the political process which was laid out in the Minsk accords,” Steinmeier said, adding that the situation in Ukraine remained “fragile,” The Local reported.
Steinmeier also warned that Kiev must undertake reforms to tackle widespread corruption and to overhaul state bureaucracy.
In Berlin, Poroshenko will meet with German President, Joachim Gauck and Chancellor Angela Merkel to focus on the urgent economic situation in Ukraine.
Poroshenko demanded that the European Union maintain its sanctions against Moscow at least until the end of the year.
He also asked the German government to provide more military technology including drones, radar reconnaissance and night vision goggles.
