The European Union does not have a particular plan of creating a European army so far but the topic may be raised at the EU summit in June, said an official representative of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas.
On Sunday, the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag published an interview with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, in which Juncker said that the European Union needs to create its own unified army as a tool to promote the interests of Europe.
"I think so far it is too early to conclude any particular plan from the interview given by the chairman of the EU,” said Schinas, reports RIA Novosti.
He said that the proposal for creating the EU’s own army is scheduled for discussion at the Summit in June. He further said that, "the Commission will analyze together with the High Representative, what the Commission can contribute to this topic."
The idea of creating an EU army received approval of the German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, who said in an interview with German radio, that the creation of a unified all EU Member States Army in the future, does seem like a reasonable prospect.
