Germany Expels More Asylum Seekers Than Ever Before

In 2014, Germany deported a total of 10,884 people, reaching the highest number of expulsions over the last eight years.

The number of expulsions in Germany has increased as more and more people arrive from the world's conflict zones, especially from Syria and Iraq.

The number of those deported from the country reached a total of 10,884, the highest rate over the last eight years. At the same time, Germany is expecting at least 300,000 new asylum applications in 2015, according to the German “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung“.

The rate of asylum seekers has dramatically risen and is closely related to the civil war in Syria and Iraq, as well as the Ukrainian conflict, “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” reported.  A total of 202,834 asylum applications were submitted in 2014, about 60 percent more than the year before.

As the influx of refugees to the EU countries grows, European governments have become wary of newcomers and have tightened their migration policies. German people view immigration as a major problem as the country is gradually unable to provide refugees with temporary housing facilities. The newcomers have also caused negative reactions among German society and contributed to the increase of the nationalist and anti-Islam sentiment.

A survey showed that about 61% of Germans are against immigration from abroad. Such rejection is also apparent in other European countries such as Italy (75%), Latvia (79%) or Slovakia (74%), “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” reported.
