EC Says Likely to Extend Financial Aid Program After Talks With Greece

EC Vice President for the Euro and Social Dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis said that the most realistic way forward for current Greece financial aid program is extension of it, thus allowing also more time for negotiations.

BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The European Commission (EC) considers the extension of the current Greece financial aid program to be the most realistic way of solving the debt crisis, EC Vice President for the Euro and Social Dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis said Monday.

Athens hopes to sign the bridge agreement ensuring financing of the country, at the same time willing to renegotiate bailout conditions and reverse austerity measures imposed by the troika of international creditors.

“From commission’s point of view, the most realistic way forward is extension of the existing program thus allowing also more time for negotiations,” Dombrovskis said.

Greece is currently in talks with the so-called Eurogroup composed of European Central Bank President Mario Draghi and Eurozone finance ministers. The sides are discussing ways to proceed with the Greek bailout program which expires on February 28.
