MOSCOW, January 27 (Sputnik) — The death toll from the crash of a Greek F-16 at the Los Llanos airbase in southeastern Spain rose to 11 Tuesday after one of the French airmen who suffered serious burns died at a Madrid hospital, Spain's Defense Ministry said, AP reported.
Both pilots aboard the crashed warplane died, along with eight French air force personnel on the ground and the French airman who died later Tuesday.
Three French jets and two Italian ones were damaged when the F-16 ploughed into several other parked planes after a failed takeoff.
The F-16 crashed at about 3:20 p.m. local time shortly after taking off at a training center in Albacete, 260 km southeast of the capital Madrid.
"There are also quite a lot of people injured… 10 French people, 11 Italians," Spain’s PM Mariano Rajoy said in an interview with Telecinco TV, Reuters reports.
Five of the injured were rushed to a specialist burns unit at La Paz Hospital in Madrid, while the others were treated at a hospital in Albacete.
"The plane lost power, crashing into the parking area for planes, crashing into various planes that were parked there," the defense ministry said in a statement.
Also participating in this year’s month-long training program were military personnel from Britain, Germany, Spain and the United States, none of whom were injured.
