Lagarde: UK, EU Should Ensure Smooth Transition to New Economic Reality
13:00 GMT 24.06.2016 (Updated: 15:27 GMT 28.05.2023) The International Monetary Fund (IMF) urges the government of the United Kingdom and the European Union representatives to make sure the transition to new economic relations in the region is smooth, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said in a statement on Friday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Thursday, the United Kingdom held a referendum to determine whether or not the country should leave the European Union. According to the final results, 51.9 percent of voters, or 17.4 million people, decided to support Brexit.
"We urge the authorities in the UK and Europe to work collaboratively to ensure a smooth transition to a new economic relationship between the UK and the EU, including by clarifying the procedures and broad objectives that will guide the process," Lagarde stated.
The IMF is ready to assist its members in the aftermath of the United Kingdom’s decision to exit the European Union, she added.
"We will continue to monitor developments closely and stand ready to support our members as needed," Lagarde stated.
"We strongly support commitments of the Bank of England and the ECB to supply liquidity to the banking system and curtail excess financial volatility," she added.
