Bolivian Deputy Minister for Electricity and Alternative Energy Joaquin Rodriguez Gutierrez said that the country's nuclear research experience remained "very limited" while the agreement with Russia's Roasatom state nuclear agency allowed Bolivia to train its own professionals in the area.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The nuclear deal with Russia will allow Bolivia to obtain the necessary knowledge in the field of atomic energy, Bolivian Deputy Minister for Electricity and Alternative Energy Joaquin Rodriguez Gutierrez told Sputnik on Tuesday.

In early March, Russia and Bolivia signed an intergovernmental cooperation agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and cooperation in building a nuclear research and technology center at an altitude of 13,500 feet above sea level in El Alto.

"[The deal] will allow us to gain knowledge in different areas, which today Bolivia does not have," the Bolivian official said.

He added that the country's nuclear research experience remained "very limited" while the agreement with Russia's Roasatom state nuclear agency allowed Bolivia to train its own professionals in the area.

"The biggest benefit is the transfer of knowledge," the official pointed out.

Russia and Bolivia signed an agreement on peaceful nuclear cooperation in 2015. Rosatom and the Bolivian Hydrocarbon and Energy Ministry signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation for peaceful uses of nuclear energy in November.
