Sudan has officially applied for membership in the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the country's oil minister Mohamed Zayed Awad said Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — OPEC is an international organization founded by oil exporting nations in 1960 aimed to coordinate their crude oil market share.

Currently, OPEC has 12 members after several composition changes – specifically, Angola's accession and the return of Ecuador in 2007.

"We have already submitted an application and are waiting for a decision," the minister told reporters. "Now, everything depends on OPEC."
