German car maker Daimler started official sales of Smart Fortwo city cars in Russia on Tuesday, Mercedes-Benz Russia said.

German car maker Daimler started official sales of Smart Fortwo city cars in Russia on Tuesday, Mercedes-Benz Russia said.

The cars will be sold by Russian Mercedes-Benz (part of Daimler Group) dealerships. Smart Fortwo will cost from 640,000 rubles ($19,882) to 740,000 rubles ($22,989), Mercedes-Benz Russia told Prime news agency.

The rear-engined two-seater city cars will be sold in "pure" trim level with a 71 h.p. engine and "passion" trim level with an 84 h.p.engine.

The first Smart prototype was presented in 1993 at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Sales of the first generation of the car began in 1998. Daimler has sold over 1.3 million Smart car vehicles all over the world.

The Smart model range has nine models, including roadsters and cabriolets.
