NEW TECHNOLOGY IS SLOWLY INTRODUCED ON RUSSIA'S MARKET

MOSCOW, January 22 (RIA Novosti correspondent Andrei Malosolov) - The volume of high technology used by Russia's industries does not meet requirements of the present day, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov said at a Cabinet meeting Thursday.

High technology is not widely used in Russia's industries, while the number of inventions is significant, said Mr Kasyanov.

Russia is repeating the former Soviet Union's mistake, he added. The Soviet times saw many inventions, but they were hardly used in industry and other economic sectors.

The premier urged that arrangements should be worked out to support research activities and promote hi tech products on the market. "As little as 10% of Russian companies introduce novel technology on the market," noted the premier.

"Measures to support research activities will help bridge the gap between Russia and the rest of the world and will act as incentives for hi tech development," added Mr Kasyanov.
