Philippine seismologists, however, set the earthquake magnitude at 6.1, which, according to the Richet scale, is considered a strong quake felt up to hundreds of kilometres (miles) from the epicentre.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck off La Paz, in the Philippines, the US Geological Survey said on Sunday.

Meanwhile, The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported an earthquake of 6.1 magnitude, with the epicentre at a depth of 77 kilometres.

There has been no further information so far concerning possible casualties or damage as a result of the earthquake.

The frequency of earthquakes in the Philippines is explained by its location in the Ring of Fire, a seismologically active zone. The archipelago lies along the border between the Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate, which are colliding and increasing the seismological activity in the area.
