Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Thursday that the country needed special legislation to target people preparing terrorist attacks ahead of the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Abe told the lawmakers that Tokyo needed to take every possible step to tackle terrorism ahead of the Olympic Games, the NHK broadcaster reported.

The media outlet added the prime minister said that the discussed legislation should not violate freedoms of belief and internal freedom.

Tokyo was chosen to host the 2020 Olympics in 2013. The games are to be held from July 24 to August 9, 2020, followed by the Paralympic Games running from August 25 to September 6.
