New Zealand’s governing National Party has elected Bill English, the former deputy prime minister, to succeed John Key as the country’s prime minister, local media reported Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Bill English was elected as the country's new prime minister, as Paula Bennett was voted to become his deputy, the Radio New Zealand reported on its Twitter page.

​​It added that English would announce a cabinet reorganization during this week.

Key announced his resignation on December 5 after eight years in the office.
