New Delhi (Sputnik) — Thanks to a pack of smart dogs, a newborn abandoned on a roadside in India’s eastern state of West Bengal is now safe and healthy. When spotted by local school teacher Ulhas Chaudhary, the four dogs were guarding the new born, seemingly waiting for a human to come and rescue her.
Police, after being informed by the locals, took the baby in to their custody. According to officials, the baby was admitted to a government hospital and is undergoing treatment for mild jaundice. Doctors said she weighed a little over six pounds and was 7-8 days old when rescued.
India has a long history of female babies being abandoned or killed spanning centuries but the crime is largely under-reported. The practice is mainly attributed to the dowry system.
Although India has taken steps to abolish the dowry system, the practice persists and for poorer families in rural regions female infanticide, gender selective abortion or abandoning newborn females can be attributed to a fear of being unable to raise a suitable dowry and then being socially ostracized.
