NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – One person died and five were injured Tuesday in an explosion at Naya Bazar in Old Delhi in India, Joint Police Commissioner Virender Chahal said.
"Blast occurred in a jute bag which the deceased person was carrying. One person has been killed while five are injured," Chahal told reporters.
He said police were considering the possibility of fireworks exploding inside the victim’s bag. Forensic experts are working on the scene.
"The blast seems to have elements of crackers. We have called forensic expert so as to verify the nature of the blast," the police officer said.
Indian media cited witnesses who claimed they saw the victim carrying a bag of firecrackers and smoking a cigarette just before the blast went off at around 11 a.m. local time (5:00 GMT).
