A US Air Force jet crashed in the waters east of Japan's Okinawa prefecture, local media reported Thursday.

TOKYO (Sputnik) — A US Air Force jet based in Kadena Air Base in the Japanese city of Okinawa crashed in the waters east of the Okinawa prefecture, local media reported Thursday.

​The crew of the AV-8B Harrier ground-attack VTOL aircraft is said to be safe, Japan's Ryukyu Shimpo daily said, citing officials.

The Nakagusuku Coast Guard division of the Japan Coast Guard was dispatched to the scene, according to the outlet.
